What is a competitive swim TEAM?
A competitive swim TEAM is just like a baseball, basketball, football or Hockey TEAM: our success is dependent on the collective contribution our athletes and their families. Without a consistent commitment to both practice and competition, we will be unable to reach our full promise as both individuals and TEAM.
Why is Parkway Swim Club’s competitive TEAM “year round”?
Here are just a few reasons why our TEAM runs year round:
1) It’s FUN! Many of our current and former families joined the Parkway Swim Club competitive TEAM following a positive Summer League experience. Our swimmers and families experience the same camaraderie, Team spirit, sportsmanship, bonding and learning as Summer League, except they get to do it all year!
2) Swimming has a MASSIVE amount of skills to learn/master; and unlike most learning takes place with our athlete’s faces in the water! With 4 competitive strokes, starts, turns, finishes, underwaters (also known as the 5th stroke), and over 18 events in which swimmers can compete, you can see why TIME is necessary for the best possible growth and development.
What is the difference between Parkway Swim Club and other Year Round programs?
Parkway Swim Club is St. Louis’ most passionate and professionally coached competitive swim TEAM. With over 100 years of combined coaching experience, the PKWY coaching staff prides itself on creating the most exciting, inspiring and FUN place for swimmers to grow and develop. Our motto “We Do Big Things” is a testament to our goal to reach our full promise as a TEAM through the collective success of our individuals. Our coaches have guided an overwhelming amount of Teams to Championship Titles, and during this process, developed many swimmers to the highest levels of our sport.
In which group will my child swim?
Group placement is determined by a swimmer’s age, ability level, commitment level and personal goals. Group placement is at the discretion of the Parkway Swim Club professional coaching staff; group placement is determined following a TEAM tryout. *Swimmers are not placed into groups based on convenience factors (ie. location, practice times, siblings, etc.) as this disturbs the integrity of group goals and training levels.
What are the groups on the competitive TEAM?
Parkway Swim Club uses a “progressive” program designed to develop the child physically, mentally and emotionally in a systematic fashion and over a long period of time. A well-defined, long term approach of gradually increasing levels of commitment has been proven to be essential to long-term development in the sport of swimming (basically, we don’t want our younger swimmers doing too much, too soon; this way they are involved in the sport longer). The emphasis in the early stages of participation must be placed on developing technical skills and a love for the sport. In the later years, a more demanding physical and psychological challenge must be introduced to the training program.

How often should my child attend practice(s)?
Each training group has specific attendance requirements appropriate for the objectives of that group. The objectives of each group are tied directly into the short and long term success of our TEAM. As a general rule, the least possible interruption in the training schedule will produce the greatest amount of success. The club does, however, encourage younger swimmers (11 & Under) to participate in other activities in addition to swimming. The expectation level of the coaches to attend practices increases as swimmers move to higher level groups in Parkway Swim Club.
How often should my child attend meets/competition?
Swim meets are a critical component for all groups/levels/swimmers in the Parkway Swim Club. Competition is the medium in which our swimmers and Team can see improvement while working to achieve Team Goals (ie. winning championship level meets). Swim meets are typically offered every 4-6 weeks and amount/type of meet participation is usually directly related to a swimmer’s age, ability level, personal goals and group.
Does my child need to tryout for the Parkway competitive Team?
All prospective members must complete a Team tryout to allow for appropriate group placement. For the 2012-2013 season, registration will be done online at:
http://www.pkwy.org/SubTabGeneric.jsp?team=mvspsc&_stabid_=56518
How many spots are available on the Team?
Spots in most competitive groups are limited to 30-40 swimmers; and this to insure an appropriate coach to swimmer ratio, as well as a more conducive learning/teaching environment.
Parkway Progression--Year Round Competitive Team
The Parkway Swim Club Coaching staff has implemented group structure changes for the upcoming 2012-2013 swim year. This plan addresses the needs of our program as we move into the new quadrennium (2012-2016); our goal is to provide the most competitive year-round competitive program possible, while providing swimmers of all levels a chance to be a part of the Parkway family.
